HOW TO GET STARTED TEAM CHASING

So you’ve decided that you fancy a go at team chasing, but how on earth do you get into it?

Your first port of call is to visit the BTC website where you’ll find a mine of info relevant to getting you going. Rules, dates and schedules, membership options, blogs, course headcams and loads more. Then once you’ve decided you definitely want to compete and you have a good idea of which event and what class you want to do, what’s next?

The BTC App

So this is where the BTC App comes into play. It’s free to download from App Store, Google Play or via this link https://links.our-app.com/api/1402 but how does it help? Think of the App as the ‘Yellow Pages’ (for those old enough to remember them!) to all things team chasing. Essentially it’s a directory that provides you a quick link to our entries and results websites as well as lots of other useful info - a bit like a condensed version of the website. Each event has its own linked App found through the four squares icon at the top right of the BTC App or using the Event Locations Map. This is where they can put useful info like course maps and pictures, start times, directions to the event, results, official photographers etc.

Become a registered Rider and Member or Team Organiser

In order to compete you must be registered on our entries system and become a BTC member. Follow the links from the website or App and these take you to https://www.teamchasingreg.co.uk/register Register yourself then login to add your horse and buy either Annual membership or a day ticket ( limited to 3 per year ) for an event. There are really useful guides to all of this in the Help section. Registering on the system is a one-off thing where you set your own username and password for your rider account. This is where all your personal details, your horses, past and current entries and memberships are stored. If you ever cannot access your account please don’t register again just Contact Us and we will help you.

If you’re not going to ride but are just going to make entries then you need to register to be a Team Organiser instead.

You are now set up to make an entry.

Join a Team

But what if you don’t have a team already organised, how do you find a run?

If you can’t persuade 2/3 of your friends to join you in this venture then you need to find a team with a spare slot.

BTC has two ways to help you with this:

1. Click on ‘Find a Team’ in the event App menu and add a post. Don’t forget to also check in ‘Find a Rider’ as the perfect team might already be posted there!

2. Use our new BTC Riders and Supporters group on Facebook. Check through the posts to see who is looking for an extra rider and put a post up yourself. Just remember to bump your post rather than post multiple times!

There are also many other pages and groups on Facebook that help match up teammates or put teams together for you. Check out the likes of Team Chasing UK, Cunning Stunts Teamchase Teams, Mo’s Minions (Team Chasing) or the Beaglin’ Rascals Team Chasers.

Get ahead for the season !

Check your hat to ensure that it is still in good working condition, including the harness.
You should replace your hat after a fall - damage can often be difficult to detect from the outside.

It is compulsory for all riders (competitors and grooms) to wear crash hats to currently recognised Safety Standards when mounted at any BTC affiliated event.

Hats must not have a fixed peak.

Hats will be identified by a BTC, BE, PC or BRC approved Hat Tag.

Only the following hat standards are accepted: British and European PAS 015 (2011) or VG01 040 2014-12 – both with a BSI Kitemark or Inspect IC Mark; American ASTM F1163 2004a onwards with SEI mark, Snell 2016 or 2021 (no other mark is needed with Snell) or Australia and New Zealand AS/NZS 3838 2006 onwards with SAI Global mark.

All competitors must also wear a body protector British Equestrian Trade Association BETA 2018 Level 3 standard (blue and black label).

A body protector of this nature is also required when competitors are wearing air jackets of any make.

It is recommended that all competitors wear a correctly fitted gumshield to help reduce the risk of concussion.

Medical arm bands, while not required, are also recommended. Though often overlooked, they can provide critical health information to responders in emergencies.

Ensure that someone who is accompanying you to the event knows any important medical history so that it can be related to the medics in the event of an injury.

TRAIN FOR TEAM CHASE SUCCESS

On March 1st we welcomed a fantastic group of riders to Loddon Court Farm for our British Team Chase training day ran by Ride with Jo Aston and Lottie Crocker Horses.

It was a brilliant day of learning and laughter, with riders working through the core skills that make Team Chasing such an exciting and rewarding sport. The focus throughout the day was on a clear, easy-to-learn process that helps riders build confidence, understand their role within the team, and develop the communication and rhythm needed to ride safely and effectively together.

The day was led by Jo Aston and Yvonne Goss and began with targeted exercises in the school that lead into practice at perfecting the technique for riding a pen. Opportunity to watch slo-mo analysis of the morning session over lunch was incredibly insightful and really helped towards putting it all together as a team in the afternoon’s mock course. Finishing the day over tea and cake and receiving expert analysis using drone footage rounded up a superb day.

The atmosphere was supportive, sociable and great fun, with riders encouraging one another and sharing the unique camaraderie that makes Team Chasing so special. FIT TO TEAM CHASE?

Yvonne Goss is a multiple national championship winning team chaser, as well as coaching riders from their first cross country to winning classes and producing horses out of racing. She’s also ‘team boss’ of the Fox Grant squads.

S he has offered us some great advice on getting horses ready for the season.

“If your horse has had a complete break, you need to allow two to two and a half months to get them fit,” she explains.

“Aim to walk for three to four weeks – some horses won’t want to do this! But your walk should be at a good speed, on the bridle. If the weather is bad or you are short of time as you get to the end of this period, you could swap a walk hack for 10 mins each way on the lunge.”

When you start trotting, pace is important, she says: “Walk fast and trot slow, on the bridle with their hind end working. The twists and turns of team chasing need the horse to be strong behind and this is how you achieve it. Doing this two or three times a week when they are fitter is better work than cantering, and you won’t need to canter so much.”

She adds that hill work is ideal, and is especially important for non-thoroughbreds who are more difficult to get really fit.

A month before the first team chase, make the canters longer, but keep the pace controlled.

“Aim to do canter work twice a week; you can use interval training, which great if you haven’t got access to gallops. Trot a couple of laps of a large field and then canter a lap, building it up as you go. It is especially useful for non-thoroughbreds to help them build stamina.”

If you are lucky enough to have gallops on hand, Yvonne suggests just going up a couple of times.

“The first time is to get them going; the second time should still be controlled and not on their forehand. Don’t let the canter just fade out as you near the end, keep going all the way to the top.”

Yvonne emphasises that riders should not expect their horses to be fully fit for the first team chase of the season, especially the longer autumn season.

“The first event should be your final ‘blowout’ so that the horse will be at his peak by the third or fourth event. And when you finish, he should not feel overtired, but really good in himself.”

While she says it’s a good idea for riders to go out cross country schooling or hedgehopping with friends before their first event – especially if they are relatively new to the sport – Yvonne suggests that gridwork is the best jumping preparation for the horse.

“Jumping up a grid keeps the horse supple and teaches them to think for themselves over a fence. That way, you can be confident that when you inevitably get it wrong at a team chase fence, your horse will know how to pop in short and get out of trouble.”

And once you are up and running for the season, Yvonne cautions against overjumping your horse.

“I’ll probably only canter once during the week in the season. My horse will have Monday and possibly Tuesday off and the aim is to keep him ticking over – walk out powerfully, trot steadily and a correct, working canter, so that they are keeping their hindquarters strong for the demands of team chasing.”

We held our AGM in December which included some invaluable discussions about the future of BTC. TRAINING

We are delighted that one of the country’s leading coaches, Jo Aston , will organise and run the first Team Chasing Clinic, kindly hosted by Lottie Crocker at Loddon Court Farm, Reading, RG7 1HU on Sunday 1st March. It will cover the core principles to an effective and safe team round and will highlight a repeatable structure and techniques for confident riding. This is aimed at those new to team chasing, as well as those looking to step up from Novice to Intermediate and is a perfect opportunity to get a solid schooling session in prior to the start of the season.

There will be a discounted rate for BTC annual members.

GENERAL POINTS

Optimum times are often a topic for discussion and so it is worth stating again that they are set in the following ranges:

425 to 475m/min for Novice (approx. equivalent to BE80 to BE100)

475 to 525m/min for Intermediate (approx. equivalent to BE100 to BE Novice)

The actual optimum time will take into consideration the course and conditions on the day.

The distances are mapped on a team chasing line so bear this in mind when walking the course. This is something that will be covered in the training clinics.

Please read the BTC rules again (you have all ticked a box stating you have done so when you registered). Even experienced team chasers do still express surprise when they fall foul of rules, often ones which have been in place for many years!

The rules are intentionally concise so that it doesn’t take too much effort to read them. Please pay particular attention to the Horse Welfare section and if you require any advice please do approach any of the Executive Committee. Equestrian sports are increasingly under scrutiny and we must always show how much we care for our horses as social license is unavoidable.

Please thank the volunteers at the team chases and treat them with respect. The events and riders rely on them and if they have an enjoyable day they will hopefully volunteer again.

Please remember that it is the rider’s responsibility to get checked out by the medics after a fall. If you fail to get checked you will be stood down from BTC competitions for 21 days. Please note all equestrian disciplines may soon have to share rider fall information, which could lead to a medical suspension across the board if you don’t get cleared to ride.

Please notify the event of any changes to the team and all riders must wear the correct colour number. If the medical team doesn’t know who you are they may not be able to treat you appropriately.

Please note the apps and the online entries are separate entities. The apps are an information tool and directory (which don’t require a login to use). They provide information pertinent to that event and quick links to relevant websites ie entries/results/official photographers etc.

All riders registered on the entries system can now make team entries. Also please DO NOT register more than once as a rider. Having multiple profiles may cause confusion in an emergency and when you enter (your membership will only be on one profile).

Please check your details are correct and up to date, especially your DoB (needed to access NHS records in an emergency).

You can amend them by logging in => Settings => Profile. If you need any help with the entries system including logins please use the Help tab and then the Contact Us link.

The leagues are really encouraging people to travel to more team chases and with a 50% increase in prize money for 2026 we look forward to them being even more competitive.

Finally entries are now open for the Bicester Team Chase so I look forward to seeing everyone on 21st March for what will undoubtedly be a cracking season opener.

WHY DO WE NEED TO PAY A MEMBERSHIP FEE TO COMPETE IN BTC EVENTS?

We believe that British Team Chasing should be a community that invests in its future and supports its events. This began in 2025 with income raised from members used to support events, improving the ground conditions caused by the lack of rain, funding developments to new tracks and improvements at existing events and purchasing timing equipment. It allows us to make improvements to the sport which will make it safer and more fun and help keep events viable.

WHY HAS IT INCREASED FOR 2026?

For 2026 we are very pleased to be announcing that as part of your annual membership you will be covered by the new BTC Public Liability Insurance Policy. This is a bespoke policy that is only for BTC members and covers you 24/7 - not just for team chasing.

WHY CAN'T I USE MY EXISTING INSURANCE?

Including insurance with membership will mitigate the risk to events; BTC is not able to check that everyone has cover and so without a mandatory policy there is a likelihood that some people won't have the requisite cover. Many riders are uncertain if they are covered or are under a misconception that they are covered. We do not believe there is another member's policy which comes close in terms of cover or value for money.

If you want to get the most advantage of this and your other member's benefits please renew your membership as soon as possible. You will not gain these benefits until your membership has been paid. 2025 Final League Standings

The British Team Chasing leagues were hotly contested once again in 2025.

Teams won points for their respective Premier Performance Open Leagu e and Stuart Nichols Waste Disposal Ltd Intermediate Leagu e at each event in the spring and autumn seasons.

PREMIER PERFORMANCE OPEN LEAGUE

Premier Performance Open League winners Team Ride Away I got their campaign off to a great start with wins at the Beaufort, Fernie and Worcestershire, adding on open victories at the Berkeley and Grafton to seal the title.
They won the Open League Trophy, £300 prize money, goody bags from Premier Performance, and in recognition of the number or riders needed to run a team through the season, engraved glasses and winners’ rosettes were presented to Roddy Stanning, Susannah Stanning, Lisette Davies, Joe Stevenson and James Sheppard.

The other podium places went to the wire, with runners’ up the Beaufort Boozers having been incredibly consistent, picking up points at eight of the year’s 12 events.

Masterless Bitch Pack took third place with placings a plenty including runner-up slot at the Worcestershire and victory at the Cotswold.

Also taking home cash prizes were Cupid Stunts , 4th, and Fox Grant Dot Com , 5th.

STUART NICHOLS WASTE DISPOSAL INTERMEDIATE LEAGUE

Eternal Optimists dominated the Stuart Nichols Waste Disposal Intermediate League , winning an impressive seven events with their bold and daring rounds.

They were presented with the Tyson Trophy in memory of Stephen Clark and Roddy Stanning’s wonderful intermediate horse, £150 prize money and fantastic commemorative jackets while rosettes went to squad members Henry Chamberlain, Ed Chamberlain, Jade Lovell, Zack Mallalieu, Jess Powell and captain Simon Coady.

Team Ride Away 4 took the runner-up slot, after a better autumn than spring season!

More Boring Gorings showed the consistency that has kept them at the top of the sport for more than 40 years to take third, with team members that hail from as far afield as East Sussex and Wales.

Prizes also went to Fox Grant Thrusters Too , 4th and Gloucestershire Equine Vets , 5th.

It was a great celebration at the Cotswold which stood in at the last minute to host the presentation after the sad loss of our usual season climax at the Essex and Suffolk.

Keep Your Stirrups!

Sophie Sheppard had a rather more eventful round at the Beaufort than she would have liked.

“My stirrup iron snapped after fence 5! I looked down and it was gone.”

Incredibly Sophie stayed on and continued, completing the course for Team Ride Away I to finish in second place. Most riders would not have the core strength and balance to do that, and stirrups breaking can lead to painful falls, even when doing something less challenging than team chasing.

While it’s true that even traditional steel or nickel stirrup irons can become brittle and snap, technical stirrups are increasingly popular.

Sophie’s stirrup was of a flexible design, intended to offer greater comfort when riding – inside the rubber covering there is a series of links which give the flexibility. These need to be checked regularly as they can corrode and then snap.

There’s also growing range of stirrups which have safety release systems. These are ideal in principle for team chasing. But they come with the added requirement to follow the manufacturer’s instructions on ensuring they are fitted correctly, that they are maintained to the manufacturer’s instructions and that you CHECK THEM REGULARLY to make sure that they are still in good condition and the mechanism works properly.

Sophie comments: “I was a little sore the next day but it could have been worse. It’s definitely been an eye opener for me to check my tack for wear and tear!”

Team chasing is one of the most exciting equestrian sports — fast, challenging, and a true test of teamwork. But like any high-adrenaline sport, things can go wrong, and when they do, the financial impact can be serious. At YPG Financial, we help riders cut through the jargon and put the right protection in place, so you can focus on competing with confidence.

Public Liability – who pays if someone else gets injured or something is damaged?

Public Liability (PL) insurance protects you if your horse causes injury to someone else or damages property — in team chasing context that could mean a spectator injured by a loose horse, or your horse damaging someone’s car as you walk past it.

Most riders already have PL through their horse insurance or sometimes even home insurance, but many policies exclude organised events and competitions. That means you might be unprotected when it really counts.

Please read the T&Cs of your current policies. If you don’t have suitable cover then you may be able to add it on to your current policy. If not, your options include taking out a standalone policy (eg with KBIS) or join an organisation which offers a PL policy of last resort which covers team chasing as part of their membership (eg The Countryside Alliance Equine Plus). From next year anyone who team chases will have 24/7 PL Insurance through their BTC membership.

Key facts for team chasing riders:

· PL is about liability to others , not your own medical bills.

· Check the wording on your PL cover, basic PL often doesn’t cover organised events like team chasing.

· PL will usually pay legal defence costs as well as settlements.

Horse Insurance (Where Public Liability Often Lives)

Horse insurance can offer a range of cover depending on the level you choose — from vet bills to loss or theft of your horse, tack and equipment, and sometimes Public Liability (PL).

The catch: many standard horse insurance policies exclude organised competitions or team chasing events. Always read the small print.

Personal Accident – a one-off payout for injury or worse

Personal Accident (PA) cover pays a lump sum if you’re injured (e.g. fractures, permanent disability) or worse while riding. It’s not designed to replace your income, but it does give you quick financial support to help with recovery costs, travel, or home adjustments.

Key facts for team chasing riders:

· Many PA policies exclude team chasing and ‘timed sports’, so it’s essential to check the wording on your cover.

· PA payouts are typically fixed sums, and you can choose the level of cover and how much you get paid out for each accident when you take out the policy.

· PA is useful for covering immediate costs but may be insufficient by itself for long-term income loss.

At YPG, we help riders choose PA cover that’s relevant and realistic, so you’re not left with token payouts that don’t actually help when you’re injured.

Income Protection – a long-term salary substitute if you can’t work

If riding is your job — whether as a professional rider, coach, or someone self-employed in the equestrian world — Income Protection (IP) is crucial. It replaces part of your income if you can’t work due to illness or injury, keeping your bills, mortgage and household secure. Unlike PA, it’s ongoing cover, not just a one-off lump sum.

Key things for team chasing riders:

· IP covers loss of income, not the cost of treating an injury. It’s the most relevant cover for self-employed equestrians

whose earnings stop if they can’t ride or work.

· Important to note that IP has a deferred/excess period (how long you must be off work for before payments start) –

you can choose how long this can be - longer delays lower premiums.

· Policies differ on whether they pay for inability to perform you own job, or any job. You need to make sure your

policy covers you for inability to perform your OWN job.

Be Body Conscious!

Be body conscious!

All team chasing competitors must wear a body protector which meets British Equestrian Trade Association BETA 2018 Level 3 Standard (blue and black label). A body protector of this nature must also be worn when competitors are wearing an air jacket of any make.

There are a number of different styles, brands and prices for body protectors – as long as it meets the standard (labelled on the body protector itself), the choice is down to personal preference. Similarly whether to wear an air jacket in addition.

You can wear your body protector under or over your shirt, depending on the fit of that garment.

It is essential that the body protector fits correctly – children and teens can quickly grow out of them, and for adults, putting on or losing weight can affect the fit.

Dear All,

I got rained on riding yesterday for the first time in months so I am keeping my fingers crossed for some more. The season is now just over two weeks away, schedules are out and entries are coming in. Please keep up to date with the latest developments by following both BTC and individual event social media pages.

Spring Season

The wet winter months soon became a distant memory as all events ran during a sunny spring season. Thank you to Beaufort for coming forward to host the first team chase of the season, following on from the cancellation last Autumn. We had lovely good ground, but following this the biggest factor causing the organisers sleepless nights was the lack of rain. Huge thanks must go to all the landowners, course builders, contractors and volunteers for all the efforts they made to ensure we had the best going possible for the rest of the season.

Well done to Worcestershire for hosting the National Championships for the first time and congratulations to Team Ride Away 1 for winning the title. It was great to see so many spectators spread around the course supporting all the teams. We look forward to returning to the fabulous Abbeylands course on 12th April next year for the 2026 Championships. This is a real opportunity to showcase our sport, so we are working to raise awareness and aiming to become an annual ‘date in the diary’.

It was fantastic to compete at a new venue at Park Eyton in the heart of the Wynnstay country. A huge thank you must go to all of those involved in both building a brand new course and running a superb day, not least landowner Harry Williams-Wynn and organiser Nicole Woodward. A great day was capped off with everyone gathering by the beer and BBQ tent to watch a thrilling GB Hunt Scurry.

Autumn Season

This record-breaking summer has not been the ideal weather for prepping the autumn team chase courses and unfortunately the ground at Warwickshire will not be safe to run on so they have made the tough decision to cancel. The Belvoir course is looking as good as ever and somehow they even have green grass!!! They have reclassified their courses to bring them more in line with BTC guidelines, so will be running Novice, Intermediate and Open classes. This ties in with our current policy of slightly easing open classes with the aim of making them an achievable goal for more riders. As the team chase draws near they will agrivate the course if necessary to ensure the best possible going. Berkeley also have plans in place to work the ground if we don’t get plenty of rain in time. So if everyone could do a rain dance that would be grand and hopefully we will get a full season of runs.

New Event for 2026

We are looking forward to Usk Valley’s inaugural event on 26th April. Those of you on social media should have seen videos and photos of the really exciting progress they are making with course building. Please follow their facebook page to keep abreast of the courses as they take shape.

Rider Public Liability Insurance Policy for 2026

It is mandatory for riders to have public liability insurance to compete at a team chase. Many people are uncertain as to whether they have cover or not and are concerned about the cost of a suitable policy.

We are pleased to announce we have secured a Public Liability policy for all members which will be included as benefit for the 2026 Annual Members. This policy of last resort will provide cover at all times during your membership (not just when you are riding) and will be applicable to the majority of equestrian disciplines, but most importantly hunting and team chasing. It is important for the events, and thus team chasing’s future, that we minimise the risk of a claim being brought against them so we must be certain that all riders are adequately covered.

Please remember that your BTC annual membership expires on 31st December, so we recommend making the most of this new benefit by renewing your membership as early as possible. Day members will also get PL cover but only when they are at the event. Membership prices for 2026 will be agreed by the members at the AGM in December but are anticipated to be circa £50 (annual) and £8 (day – limited to 3 per year).

Rider Registrations

Registering as a rider is a one-time only deal! We have been tidying up the entries system as quite a few people have registered themselves more than once. Please do not register as a rider again, as this may cause issues such as incorrect profile details and you paying the same membership more than once!! If you have any issues logging in please use the HELP/FAQs button or email admin@britishteamchasing.co.uk . Please can you check your details on the entries system - www.teamchasingreg.co.uk/login and in particular that your full name and date of birth are correct. If you have a fall the medical team will use this information if they need to access your NHS medical history. Start the Season Right: Your Team Chasing Prep Guide

First things first—make sure you’re a registered BTC member. It sounds obvious, but it’s one of those things that’s all too easy to forget when you're busy getting horses fit, kit cleaned, and lorries road-ready.
While you're at it, take a minute to update your contact details, horse info, and team name if anything’s changed.

It’s far easier to tick it off now than scramble through it in a flap the night before an event—and if you get stuck, just give us a shout at admin@britishteamchasing.co.uk. Membership runs from 1st January to 31st December, so there's absolutely no reason not to get it sorted. One quick job done, one step closer to that start box—and one less thing to worry about when the adrenaline’s already doing its thing.

Check Your Insurance Cover

It’s also a good idea to check your insurance cover . BTC membership currently does not include public liability insurance , so please ensure your provider covers team chasing specifically —it’s not always included in standard equestrian policies. The good news? From next season , PL insurance will be included with your membership. Until then, double-check that you're properly protected.

Kit Check: Don’t Let the Team Down

Let’s talk safety. Your hat and body protector must meet the standards listed in the BTC Rule Book. We’ve got stewards on the ground at every event, and they may check your gear—even after your round. If it’s not compliant, you risk your entire team being eliminated.

So now’s the time to make sure everything’s up to standard and in good condition. And while you're in the Rule Book looking up what qualifies, take a few extra minutes to give the whole thing a read. It might not be gripping fiction, but it’s packed with info that’ll keep you and your team on the right side of the rules.

And while we’re on kit—You need your own number bib , so dig it out and give it a wash. Fence judges aren’t psychic—they need to see those numbers clearly!

Tack Check... Yes, That Includes Cleaning It

And yes—tack cleaning. No one enjoys it, but while you're elbow-deep in saddle soap, it's the perfect time to catch any weak points or damage you’d miss mid-season. Girths, reins, stirrup leathers, martingales—give everything a good once-over. Look out for worn stitching, cracked leather or frayed straps. Plus, there’s something quite satisfying about heading into the first event with everything gleaming (even if it only lasts until fence two).

For horses involved in high-energy sports like team chasing, proper nutrition plays a vital role in ensuring optimal performance and recovery. These horses require tailored diets to meet the demands of intense exercise and help them recover effectively after each competition. Key nutritional components; carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, minerals, and water, are essential in supporting your horse’s physical demands, both during training and post-competition recovery.

Fuelling for Performance

Team chasing involves high-intensity bursts of energy, so horses need a diet that supplies the right type of fuel to perform at their best. Carbohydrates (CHO) are the primary source of energy, providing the necessary fuel for muscle contractions during the chase. However, fats are also a valuable energy source, offering twice the amount of energy per kilogram compared to carbohydrates. Fat is stored in the horse’s body as triglycerides and serves as a reserve during intense efforts. Protein, although important for muscle repair, is not a significant energy source unless a horse is malnourished or unwell.

In high-intensity activities like team chasing, horses rely on glycogen (stored carbohydrates) and fat stores. After intense exercise, these energy stores, especially glycogen, are depleted. Therefore, replenishing these stores quickly is crucial for optimal recovery and to prepare the horse for future competition.

Muscle Recovery and Nutritional Support

After team chasing events, muscle recovery is key to ensuring your horse remains in peak condition. It’s important to remember that muscle glycogen replenishment can take up to 72 hours, regardless of the diet provided. Unlike humans, horses do not replenish glycogen stores rapidly and overloading them with starch post-competition can cause gastrointestinal issues like colic.

To aid muscle recovery, antioxidants like vitamin E play a significant role. During exercise, free radicals are produced in the muscles, which can cause oxidative damage if not neutralized. Ensuring that your horse's diet contains adequate vitamin E can help mitigate free radical damage and support overall recovery. Some studies also suggest that supplementing vitamin E after competition may further enhance muscle recovery.

Additionally, providing branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) such as leucine, isoleucine, and valine can aid in muscle protein synthesis and help prevent muscle breakdown. These amino acids are crucial during the recovery phase, particularly 24 to 48 hours after intense exercise.

Practical Feeding Recommendations for Team Chasing Horses

To support both performance and recovery in team chasing horses, here are some practical feeding guidelines:

· Forage: Provide high-quality forage to replenish carbohydrates and encourage water intake.

· Water: Ensure access to water both before and after competition to maintain hydration.

· Electrolytes: Include electrolytes in the diet to support hydration and replenish losses.

· Vitamin E: Ensure the diet includes sufficient vitamin E to combat free radical damage.

· BCAAs: Consider adding BCAAs to the diet to enhance recovery and reduce muscle breakdown.

New Team Chasing Clinic Announced for April 2025!

British Team Chasing is thrilled to introduce an exciting new training clinic aimed at Novice to Intermediate level riders, taking place on Sunday, 27th April 2025 at the Worcestershire Team Chase course.

This immersive, full-day event is designed to boost confidence, enhance technical riding skills, and strengthen teamwork in a competitive setting.

Led by experienced coaches Jo Aston, Debbie Topping, and Yvonne Goss, the clinic will offer riders group sessions covering core principles such as rider and horse balance, line riding accuracy, and effective team positioning over varied terrain and fences.

The format includes two morning training blocks, video playback and feedback during lunch, an afternoon course walk, and a final practice round on a shortened course—all with expert guidance and real-time feedback.

Spaces are limited to two groups of eight riders , ensuring plenty of individual coaching within a team setting. The cost is £125 for riders, £110 for British Team Chasing Members, and £30 for non-riders (including lunch).

Whether you're a seasoned rider or a beginner, prioritising safety is critical.

We have put together an overview of key safety gear and medical considerations for riders, especially those with health conditions.

Key Safety Gear for Team Chasing

Helmets
You must wear a helmet that meets current safety standards such as PAS 015 or VG01 040 2014-12. (see rulebook for a comprehensive list of accepted standards). Replace it after any significant impact as it may no longer provide adequate protection.
Body Protectors
A level 3 body protector (BETA 2018 standard) is required to ensure the highest level of protection. This will help to protect your torso during a fall, reducing the potential severity of rib and organ injuries. Air jackets are also a useful tool in protecting your body against potential injuries.
Gum Shields
Gum shields, while not required, are recommended. They can absorb impact, reducing the risk of concussions and dental injuries, They’re a simple yet effective addition to your gear.
Medical Arm Bands
Medical arm bands, while not required, are also recommended. Though often overlooked, they can provide critical health information to responders in emergencies. Include your name, emergency contact details, and any relevant medical information like clotting disorders, diabetes, epilepsy, or drug allergies. List medications such as blood thinners, insulin, or an EpiPen if applicable.

Medical Considerations For A Medical Arm Band

Before participating in a team chase, it’s important to understand how certain medical conditions or treatments can affect your safety, If any of these apply to you, include them on your medical arm band for better safety.

Blood Thinners/Clotting Disorders
If you have an increased risk of bleeding please include details on your medical arm band.
Insulin-Dependent Diabetes
Carry fast-acting glucose and ensure your team knows how to assist in emergencies.
Epilepsy
Keep medication well-managed, and ensure your medical arm band includes details.
Previous Cardiac Problems
Disclose your condition to teammates and include it on your armband.
Asthma/COPD
Make sure your inhaler is easily accessible, and list medications and dosages on your medical arm band.
Drug Allergies/EpiPen
State your allergies and the location of your EpiPen on your medical armband.

Ensure your teammates know about your medical conditions and medications to provide appropriate care in emergencies.

Ensure You Have the Right Insurance for Team Chasing

Team chasing is an exciting and fast-paced sport, but it’s essential to make sure you are properly covered before you compete. Having the right insurance protects both you and those around you, giving you peace of mind while you ride.

I hope everyone is well and looking forward to the spring team chase season starting at the Duke of Beaufort’s team chase on 23rd March. As of Wednesday 19th February entries are open.

We are very excited to be including a new venue in the calendar this spring with two more currently planned for spring 2026. Please look out for social media posts from the Wynnstay as their courses take shape ready for 20th April.

Thank you to everyone who responded to the end of season questionnaire and who attended the AGM in December. The feedback has reassured us that the recent developments have been well received and the areas we are now concentrating on fall in line with what both competitors and events feel is important. Hopefully our increased communication will keep everyone abreast of current team chasing matters and the progression of the sport.

MEMBERSHIP

Thank you to all those who paid a voluntary membership last year. With over 70% of responses to our questionnaire supporting a membership for 2025, it was proposed and agreed at the AGM there will be a compulsory membership set at £15/yr for Associate Members and £5/day for Temporary Members. Once registered and logged in as a rider on the BTC entries system, select the membership tab on the menu to join. The board believes membership is the best way to ensure the future of the sport as it has become increasingly difficult to raise income through sponsorship in comparison to years gone by. Fortunately membership subscriptions can be set at this very affordable level due to the large number of competitors that take part in our sport. This additional revenue will allow BTC to support events through a new grant and loan process for numerous areas including but not limited to:

Weather resilience – both wet weather and dry weather
Course improvements - such as improving/protecting hedges, sprucing hedges, installing removable stock proofing
Cancellation support
Building of new courses
IT support
Logistic Support
Timing equipment

BTC plans to be able to direct funds towards riders in a number of ways, including running training days and improving prizes at the National Championships. The first training clinic is going to be aimed at those new to or yet to try team chasing. We are currently planning the clinic and will announce the date and location in due course.

INSURANCE

We expect to include Rider Public Liability Insurance as an additional member’s benefit in 2026. We have been working hard on this and have been offered a policy in principle, but this will take some time to be drawn up and approved. For annual members this policy of last resort will cover them 24/7 whether at a team chase or not. There has been confusion from competitors as to whether they are covered by any policies they may already have in place, so please can everyone double check their policy details. Please be aware that many policies included by other member organisations exclude team chasing.

RULE CHANGES

Any amendments to the Rules, Regulations and BTC governance are highlighted in the respective documents which can all be found on the BTC website. The requirement for riders to be checked by the on-course medics following a fall or unseat has generally been fulfilled. Riders must get checked otherwise they will be stood down for 21 days. The rule preventing a rider competing after two falls in one day has been removed. They must still be checked after each fall and be cleared before they can ride again. Riders must also take responsibility for their own wellbeing and not ride again if they have any symptoms of concussion. This can present hours after a fall and so be aware it may become apparent even after being checked by a medic.

An amendment has been made to the scoring system for the Open league when there is not an Open class. Points awarded will be relative to all the teams in the class not just the Open teams.

ENTRIES

The entries system has undergone an upgrade which should help everyone especially the team organisers who can now make multiple entries and pay for them in one go. Horses will shortly be linked to their riders. Riders are now recognised on the system by a username rather than their email address so email addresses can be used for more than one family member. Everyone registered on the system will receive an email in the next 24hrs with their username which will be the name separated by an underscore (ie fred_bloggs), passwords remain the same. If you have any issues please check the FAQs and then if further help is required please email admin@britishteamchasing.co.uk.

We are upgrading the apps so that there will be no requirement to log in to use the chat functions and making it even simpler to switch between each event app.

COURSE NEWS

In order to encourage more riders and teams to enter the open classes, BTC is encouraging the courses to reduce the dimensions of their larger hedges. Not only will this make the hedges easier this year, it will allow for new growth, which is more forgiving, to bring the hedges back up to their former glory in the future.

BTC will also guarantee prize money at the National Championships down to 8th place, so make sure you qualify. For any teams which haven’t already qualified for this year’s Championships at Worcestershire on 13th April, you can apply for a wild card entry via this form - https://forms.gle/EnACU2LbaPkTH9Ns9

Optimum times are set in the following ranges 425 to 475m/min for Novice (approx. equivalent to BE80 to BE100) and 475 to 525m/min for Intermediate (approx. equivalent to BE100 to BE Novice). The actual optimum time will take into consideration the course and conditions on the day.

A huge congratulations to Becki Stanley of the Cupid Stunts, who has been awarded the Tumblers Club prize for the most spectacular fall! Becki’s impressive cartwheel at the Grafton earned her a well-deserved bottle of Foxdenton Dutch Courage gin . Notice of the British Team Chasing Annual General Meeting

We are pleased to announce that the British Team Chasing Annual General Meeting (AGM) will take place at 2:00 PM on Sunday, 15th December 2024 , at Shires Farm, Lionel Way, Hawford, Worcestershire WR3 7SG .

The AGM is an important opportunity for members to come together, discuss the progress of our sport, and contribute to its future direction. It’s also a chance to raise any questions, share ideas, and connect with others who are passionate about team chasing.

Voting at the AGM:
All British Team Chasing members are eligible to vote on decisions that will shape the upcoming year. Your voice is vital in helping us move forward as a governing body and community.

2025 LEAGUE WINNERS ANNOUNCED

British Team Chasing has crowned its league champions for 2024 in a series that went right to the wire at the final event of the season, the Essex and Suffolk. We could not run this championship without the generous sponsorship of Premier Performance and Stuart Nichols Waste Disposal , who provided wonderful rosettes and prizes for the winners and runners up.

Having lost the spring season to the weather, it all came down to the autumn events, with seven team chases surviving further deluges.

In the Premier Performance Open League, Fox Grant Dot Com secured the title with a last-gasp win at the Essex and Suffolk.

It’s been a season of trials and tribulations for the reigning national champions with several riders and horses out of action, but Will Grant and Phil Nichols recruited Alice Homer and Joe Neal from the Wishful Thinkers for an impressive spin around the big hedges at Semer. Will gave them an awesome lead on the evergreen Skipper Robin, fresh out of retirement. They also took the runner-up slot at the Cotswold and third at the Grafton.

Team Ride Away I suffered a ‘crash and burn’ at the Essex and Suffolk, but a win at the Cotswold and victories in the Warwickshire, Kimblewick and Heythrop inter (which score half marks for open teams) gave them the runner-up prize.

Cupid Stunts showed impressive consistency for third, having been placed in the Grafton and Cotswold opens, but were at their best at Semer, showing the ultimate in teamwork to conquer the track.

The Stuart Nichols Waste Disposal Intermediate League was ultra-competitive once again, but here Team Ride Away 4 had hit the ground running at the Warwickshire and won five of the seven events.

At the Essex and Suffolk it was another great effort, make all the more impressive by the fact that Luke Bacon was riding Dai Harrison’s Prince Khan for only the second time, and Will Badlan stepped in to ride De Rasher Counter for Roddy Stanning at the last moment. Also on the new theme, Amber Bradshaw’s Cool Choice is in his first season team chasing as are Ellie Mitchell and GG!

Eternal Optimists pressed them all the way with wins at the Grafton and Cotswold, plus four second places, and they never fail to produce an exciting round.

Credit should also go to some impressive performances by Neilson’s Foursome (5th) who challenged the leading teams throughout the season, and to Gloucestershire Equine Vets , who started the season in novice classes and then stepped up to inter to get on the leaderboard.

British Team Chasing Chairman Roddy Stanning said: “It’s been a fantastic autumn season with brilliant competition between the teams and we appreciate how everyone has joined in with the spirit of the leagues and made them so exciting right down to the final event. We owe a huge vote of thanks to our sponsors Premier Performance and Stuart Nichols Waste Management for their support of the leagues.”

We are delighted to announce that the British Team Chase App and the autumn British Team Chase Affiliated Event Apps are available for download for both android and iphones. Please use the QR code or link below to download the BTC App from which you can easily find the event apps.Please download and make use of the new BTC App and the apps for individual BTC events you are planning to attend. These apps are designed to be your first port of call to find information about the events - location, course description, start times and live results as well as enabling riders to find a team and visa versa. The app will continue to be developed and updated so please give us some feedback – admin@britishteamchasing.co.uk

In order to use some of the functions, such as commenting on the Find A Team or Find A Rider chats you will need to register on the relevant event app and be logged in. You can have the same login details for the BTC App and any of the event apps.

The events are able to send notifications to anyone who has downloaded the App/s so please allow notifications to be received, at least immediately prior to an event and on the day so that you remain fully informed.

We hope everyone finds this simple to use and a helpful tool to make team chasing even more fun and inclusive.

We have sent this out as an email campaign, so please all check your inboxes/ spam folders to ensure you have received this! It will have been sent from admin@britishteamchasing.co.uk and everyone who has signed up as a rider, team organiser, and members should have received a copy.

We at British Team Chasing are delighted that Nicky is the winner, she has been a secretary for the Heythrop team chase for several years, and has given so much to team chasing for so long and we hope her stay in Villa Askalia is a fantastic one!

Will you join the BTC Tumblers' Club this season ? It comes to most of us at some point, which is why we have rules for the welfare of horses and riders and stipulate safety wear. But it's also a fun way to raise funds for our nominated charity - the Bristol Children's Hospital's Grand Appeal. You can either donate £10 for each time you join the BTC Tumblers' Club (fall off at a team chase) or you can do as several committee members have already done, 'insure yourself' against repeated payments by paying £20 upfront for the season. It's totally voluntary but we hope that members of the #teamchasingfamily will join in the spirit of this!
